Getting Back to Work After Your Maternity Leave

Your baby has grown, your Maternity Leave is up, and now it’s time to go back to work or study. Are you ready? And is your family ready?
After I saw a close friend experience separation anxiety resuming work and leaving her child to the care of others, I saw this as a needful article.
Family life can get more complicated with parents working or studying. There are care arrangements to organise, logistics to plan, and conflicting emotions to process.
So what can help ease the transition for both you and your child?
Here are some tips;
Recognize and work on your emotions
You’re likely to experience a range of emotions, such as guilt at leaving your child in someone else’s care, and worry about how your child will manage without you. But you may also feel excited about the possibilities of having time away from your child, and freedom to explore a new way of being a person and a parent.
You should know that all of these emotions are normal and valuable, you can make the most of the opportunities, and manage the guilt and worry more easily.
Support your child
If your child has largely been at home with you, beginning childcare can be a big change. Depending on your child’s temperament, it’s common for them to express some separation anxiety, which may include crying when you leave, clinging onto you, and not wanting you to go.
At drop off, it often helps to get your child settled into an activity, explain that you’re leaving but you’ll be back, and then leave without too much delay. You can always call to find out how your child is going a little later.
Staff at the centre or at home even your caring relatives can also work with you to support a gentle transition into care.
Get practical
When beginning child care, it’s useful to have a good understanding of how it works. Practical questions to ask for daycare might include: What times can I drop off and pick up my child? Will I be able to visit and call my child at any time? Do you provide nappies and meals or do I need to provide them?
It’s also useful to have an understanding of child to staff ratios, the skills and experience of staff, and how staff will encourage your child’s learning and development. With these practical questions answered, you can feel more confident and comfortable with leaving your child in care.
Learning and growing together
Education begins at home from the minute a baby is born. But child care can broaden and develop your child’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth.
Focus on quality
A quality childcare centre opens up your child’s world to new relationships and new opportunities to play, learn and develop.
Conduct a thorough reference check.
Do not rely on the nanny agency’s background check as the final word — conduct your own.
Carry Out Medical Screenings
Screen for HIV, Hepatitis B and other communicable ailments in your caretaker and request same from your day care centre.

French Riviera
The French Riviera is the Mediterranean coastline of the southeast corner of France. Cities like the sovereign state of Monaco, Nice, Saint Tropez, Toulon, Cannes, Hyeres and more are part of the Riviera. It’s no surprise that the French Riviera is a major tourist attraction. Situated at and to the east of the point where the Alps meet the Mediterranean, it is an area that enjoys a wonderfully mild to warm climate all year round.
Through autumn and Winter, the Riviera is protected from cold north winds by the Alps in its hinterland; since frosts and snow are rare, Spring comes early, bringing the first mimosas into bloom by February; by April the days are normally sunny and warm, and gardens already filled with flowers. From May to September or October, the climate is ideal, with plenty of sunshine and warm to hot days and beautifully warm nights.
Resorts
There are a lot of wonderful resorts spanning the coastline of the French Riviera depending on where you decide to visit in the Riviera. These are open all year round. There are mostly built along or close to the marina so tourists can enjoy the breath-taking views and indulged in the wild life. Resorts you can check out include Les Balons D’Azur, The Hyatt Regency Nice Palais De La Mediterranee et al.
Eat Your Heart Out
We all know about the French cuisine so let’s not say too much before I get a food panic attack, but I will recommend a few dishes and drinks that are a must try from the Riviera. Dine like royalty and a movie star or artist their favourites include Tapenade, Nougat, omelette aux truffes, Ratatouille (yes it’s the dish from the Disney cartoon), aioli, tarte tropezienne, fromage de chevre, bouillabaisse.
Fashion & Pop Culture
Just like food the French are known for fashion, the French Rivera has housed a lot of the world renounced fashionistas like Coco Chanel just to name a few. There are a list of must have fashion items you would need to bleed in with the fancy folk on the coast. You must have you your minimal bikinis so you sun bath on a yacht or the beach, the little white dress, your flares & cropped pants, get you a straw hat so you can look like a movie star from the 50’s last but not the least your chiffon dress game must be tight. Your fashion will complement the scenery during the day and buzzing night life which celebrities from Puff Daddy to Leonardo Di Carpio have been known to indulge in.
 Festivals and fireworks
This is probably the most exciting thing about the French Riviera. Several events include.

Monaco; Monte Carlo Masters (Tennis), April/May
Monaco; Formular One Grand Prix, May
Cannes; Cannes Film Festival, May
Nice; Jazz Festival, July
Toulon; Toulon Tournament. Tall Ships Race

Lunch Recipe: Yummy Yam Croquettes

Hello!
Thinking of one more way to make something interesting out of that yam tuber you’ve got? Or thinking of trashing those leftover cooked yams?(Yam Croquettes).I used to do just that till I found out this amazing yummy yam delicacy. I’m sure you won’t ever let yam go to waste again after you try out this recipe.
Traditionally, croquettes are made from mashed potatoes or rice (a great way to use them up when leftover). This is a very special delicacy found almost everywhere in Europe (especially in France and Belgium), and some parts of Asia. But it’s fast becoming widely accepted in Africa and other parts of the globe.
Well, if croquettes can be made from starchy carbs like potatoes and rice, then why not with yam. Afterall, yams are almost similar and often confused with sweet potatoes.
The technique to this cuisine is pretty easy. Simply mash and roll yams with savoury fillings into balls, oval or cylinder shape. If you ask me, the spicy tasty fillings are the catch to this meal. Another good thing is, they can be made ahead of time and frozen till when ready to fry or bake.
Ingredients(Yam croquettes)

300g or ½ Tuber Yam (salted and cooked)

For filling:

Flaked Fish or Mince meat/chicken or shrimps
1 Egg
1 Tbsp Ground Crayfish (optional)
1 Stalk Spring Onions, chopped
2 medium sized carrot, grated
3 Scotch bonnet (ata rodo) – Optional if to be eaten as snacks
½ Tbsp Chilli Pepper
½ Tsp Paprika
Seasoning cube
Salt to taste

For coating, you’ll need:

1 Egg
1 Cup low fat milk
Bread crumbs
½ Cup plain/wheat flour

Directions:

In a bowl, mash cooked yam till smooth.
In another bowl, combine fish flakes/mince meat, crayfish, pepper, veggies, seasoning cube and spices. Beat one egg and pour about half into mixture to consolidate nicely.
Break remaining egg into a small bowl with the milk and whisk thoroughly. Set aside.
Take a portion of the mashed yams, make an opening and scoop in some of the mixed fillings. Knead gently to cover-up while also forming preferred shape. Do same with remaining mashed yam till you’ve them all in balls.
Place the moulded balls in the flour and coat finely. Remove from flour, shake and dip into the egg-milk mixture. Remove and roll in bread crumbs. Set aside and repeat process till all balls have been coated.
If baking, spray each ball slightly with cooking spray then place on greased oven plates. Heat oven to about 375 degrees and bake till golden brown.
If frying, insert in hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain excess oil on paper towel. Serve hot.

Yam croquettes are great for side dishes, snacks, or appetizers. If using as a main meal, simply enjoy with tasty pepper sauce (ata dindin) / stir fried veggies or ketchup as dip.

Mocktail Recipes for the Teetotaller

Teetotalling? Don’t worry, you’re not alone.
Well, drinks can be fun when hanging out with friends or trying to cool off after a hard day’s work especially in a society where drinking is an acceptable part of socialization. BUT abstinence from alcohol is widely becoming a trend the world over.  More like a positive socio-cultural change as many more become consciously aware of the detrimental impact of alcohol.
Day by day, many more people are gunning for a healthier lifestyle by avoiding alcohol. And interestingly, gone are the days when alcohol-free options were boring sugar laden frizzy drinks. Bars and mixologists have found exciting ways to create non-alcoholic versions of favourite boozes as the need to provide apt alternatives for non-liquor drinkers increases. And they are definitely as tasty and refreshing and even more thirst quenching too!
Got friends coming over for a fun weekend and thinking of something different from the conventional store-bought liquor-free drinks? Need some classy pleasurable drinks?  This is for you!

Exercises to burn off calories in common foods

Being mindful of the amount of calories in the foods we consume is key and very practical in keeping an effective weight management regimen. But sometimes, indulging in certain “comfort foods” which are mainly junk foods becomes quite hard to resist.
Junk foods are usually loaded with calories with little or no nutritional value. Yielding to them frequently may be detrimental especially for someone on a weight loss journey. However, if one is aware of the calorie content in some of these foods and the amount of exercises needed to burn off the calories, limiting consumption to the barest minimal or a total do-without might just be easy. Don’t you think so?
Imagine enjoying a chilled drink of coke knowing well that just 33cl of it contains 139 calories. Burning that off entails – 14 minutes of intense cardio (running, swimming, skipping, cycling) OR 19 minutes of strength training/body building moves using weights. Wow, right?
Are you a lover of KFC chicken and chips? A large portion of KFC French fries packs about 430 calories. Combine this with 3 KFC crispy chicken pieces with a whooping 570 calories! To use up these 1000 calories, you’ll need 2hrs 3minutes of intense cardio OR 2hrs 45minutes of strength training and dumb bell moves.
A 450g of chocolate cake without frosting contains about 1670 calories. To burn off these calories, be ready to do: 60 minutes aerobics (505 calories) + 60 minutes medium intense Pilates (450 calories) + 60 minutes skipping (720 calories) = 3 hours of moderate exercising. Alternatively, 60 minutes of HIIT (High intensity interval training/workout – sprinting, swimming, rowing, stationary boxing and circuit training routines) can also be engaged to burn off these calories acquired within few minutes of pleasure.
Let’s take a look at the amount of calories in 3 common Naija foods and how to burn them up.
1 cup of garri which makes just about a wrap of eba has 360 calories. Brisk walking for about 3-4 miles within an hour will burn off 360 calories effectively.
A slice of white bread weighs about 25g with 66 calories. Consuming 4 slices is approximately 264 calories. To work off this, do 30 minutes on the statutory bike.
Can’t do without rice? Most people can’t. A cup of cooked long-grain white rice has 206 calories. Take an hour stroll after meal to burn up the calories and you’re good to go.
The calorie content in your choice of animal protein and cooking oil especially, plus how you cook your everyday meals should also be considered when calculating calorie intake. Hence, it pays to always use healthiest methods of cooking.
Are you willing to spend all hours of your day working out? I bet not!
Treats are awesome. Nevertheless, as gratifying as having some favourite snacks and foods may seem, it’s best to limit intake of junks and calorie-laden foods to as minimal as possible. And when serving, portion control is the word!

How to Get Back In Shape

The more I scroll through social media the crazier the ideas I have. I’ve been stalking some cosmetic surgeons and celebrity trainers. I wish I could just go and hand over myself to them really.
Wouldn’t you love to spend the next week at a luxurious spa to shed those extra kilograms and lose those labs? Impractical? Okay, here is a DIY approach to getting back in shape. Let us try these more practical steps. These steps are also very effective if you are trying to get your revenge body after a break up.
1. Hit the ground running
Start every day with physical activity. Don’t even think about it! Before checking email, taking phone calls or applying make-up, get out the door for a walk, jump on your home treadmill or go to the gym. I know you are going to complain about traffic going to work but you can also turn your house chores to a work out. Scrub that bath tub harder!
2. Eat breakfast every morning
You should eat breakfast, preferably at home, so you’re not tempted to eat junk at the office. Skimping on breakfast usually backfires and causes over-eating later. Start with a high fiber breakfast, such as oatmeal to regulate the system and fill you up.
3. At lunch, eat only lean proteins
My new go to lunch for the past two weeks has been ewa agonyin. Beans. Lean proteins such as seafood, poultry, extra-lean red meat, fruits and veggies (fruits and veggies are an unlimited item in your menu). Banish refined starchy foods and sugars from lunch and dinner until you lose your desired weight. It doesn’t have to be fancy.
4. Give your muscles some TLC
You must build up to at least 10,000 pedometer steps minimum — but 12,000 to 15,000 steps per day average — to lose weight and transform your health with ease. Those fitbit that are in fashion now have an actual purpose. You can also download similar apps on your devices.
5. Drink
Drink water, that is. Rehydration is key. Focus on downing six to eight glasses of water daily. Add a lemon or orange slice for vitamin C to burn fat and decrease inflammation. Both your stomach and skin will thank you for it!
6. Eat light at night
At night time, you want to consume fewer calories than you would early in the day. Soup is ideal for helping you feel satisfied with fewer calories, so you don’t go to bed feeling too full and can wake up hungry for a good breakfast in the morning.
7. Sleep at least seven to eight hours, nightly
Study after study has shown that sleep disturbances are correlated with weight problems. I know it may not be possible every time but you have to try.
8. It takes a village
Spend your time with like-minded people and avoid people who will sabotage your goals. This is an important feature of being at a spa, one reason being there makes achieving weight-loss goals so easy. If your spouse or friends are not on board, it will be difficult to stick with any plan.

How to Grow Tomatoes At Home

Don’t laugh o. This is serious. So I went to the market last week after drawing up a list and budget. I went to buy tomatoes and pepper, I planned to use the cheat mode I usually use on the mallams selling. “Give me all for three hundred naira”. All usually includes tomatoes, bell pepper (tatashe) and chilli pepper (rodo). You can imagine my shock when the guy revolted, “Madam, we no dey sell like that again”. Trust me, I have used this method countless times and even beg for extra. You should have seen the miserable tomatoes in a small bowl he informed me was three hundred naira. I bought it but the situation lighted a fire in me. I remembered as a child, seeing my aunt grow tomatoes and scent leaf in her backyard. I have decided to grow tomatoes and I want to involve you. Before you tell me about your landlord, they grow in pots.
So let’s begin…
Growing tomatoes is an easy process once you get the hang of it. There are many different kind of tomatoes but they are mostly made the same way just take different times for them to mature.
When starting with seeds
it is best to plant your tomatoes indoors to start with, you can put them in small containers. The seeds should be planted about 1/8 of an inch into the soil. Once the seedlings have emerge you will need to start giving the plant sunlight for it to remain sturdy.
When starting with a transplant
Obtain a healthy tomato plant. Most varieties can be grown in pots, but larger tomatoes will need larger containers. Tomato plants are also significantly easier to grow by transplant, rather than by seed.  Most tomato plants require a 15-gallon (60-liter), 18-inch (46-centimeter) pot in order to have adequate room to develop. Some small varieties may fit inside a 12-inch (30.5-centimeter) pot, but the roots will be restricted and your yield may not be very impressive. You can simply buy a potting mix from a gardener or gardening shop even those people that sell plants by roadsides. Mix fertilizers into the soil. Push the stem of the plant into the existing soil, just enough to give it a base of support.  Pack the soil around the stem of the tomato plant as you go, making sure that it remains securely fixed in the pot and does not wiggle around. Water it well but don’t drown it o. Apply a water soluble fertilizer after you water your plants in the morning. Keep an eye out for garden pests. Harvest your tomatoes one by one, once they develop their red color. The fruits should almost be completely red, with only trace amounts of green remaining. Ripe tomatoes can be plucked or snipped off their branches.
Please contact me as soon as you have ripe tomatoes.

Fuel Up: Pre-Work Out Nutrition Ideas

Is it necessary to eat ahead of a workout especially in the mornings? How often do you skip meals before heading out to the gym? For fear of restrictions from feeling full or sometimes seen as extra stress, not bothering with food prior to workouts comes quite easy. But in reality, this isn’t ideal. You may not know, but it’s a possible way of undoing the very thing you’re working hard to achieve. Do you know that exercising on an empty stomach often leads to unhealthy breakdown of muscle tissues?
Ever experienced your tummy growling in hunger during a workout? Starting workouts without fuelling is totally wrong. Whether trying to lose weight, build muscles, or simply to keep fit, your body needs fuel (energy) for workouts. Eating provides your body the burst of energy it needs to make it through workouts. Not eating before workouts may cause light-headedness and undue fatigue as your body gets low on stored glucose. In such situations, your body uses up muscle energy. In addition, your metabolism is negatively affected and your ability to burn calories is significantly limited.
Pre-work out Meal
Eating the right foods before workouts are very vital, and in fact shouldn’t be ignored. Carbohydrates are essentially what keep your body energized during workouts. Protein is another indispensable nutrient for pre-workouts because of their muscle-building abilities.
A mixture of healthy carbs and proteins like whole-grain cereals with low-fat milk/ yoghurt, brown rice with lean protein (fish/turkey/chicken), toasted wheat bread with eggs are some healthy sustenance to consider at least 2-3 hours before your scheduled workout. They’ll digest and absorb easily into your system and keep you energized throughout your exercise.
However, some fruits and vegetables also contain healthy essential carbs that are crucial and should be on your pre-workout diet list. Carbs in fruits are quick digesting thus immediate source of energy right before a workout. If sometimes short of time to make a meal or with less than an hour before workout, snacking on just a piece of apple or banana is all you need to fuel up 15-30 minutes earlier.
Are you aware that some fruits are outstanding fat burners? Plus the fact that smoothies are easy, fast, filling and low-calorie ways of getting energized make a combination of vegetables and energy boosting fruits the smartest approach to get prepped before workouts.
Thinking of going the smoothie way? Here are some balanced combo suggestions:

Grape, Orange, and Spinach
Banana, Apple, Oats and Greek yoghurt
Peanut butter, Kiwi, Kale and low-fat milk/yoghurt
Almonds, Oats and Strawberries with a dash of green leaves and low-fat milk
Date fruits, Banana, Apple and Carrots

And don’t forget water, you need lots and lots of it to stay hydrated during exercises.
Pre-workout food, smoothies, or snacks? Which works best for you? It’s important to note how your body reacts to the kind of fuel you give it. Only then can you decisively figure out the most suitable eating plan.

Staying physically fit during pregnancy and post delivery.

Asanas are the most suitable and safest prenatal yoga poses. Let’s take a look at some popular ones and their specific benefits.
Extended Side Angle Pose (Utthita Parsvakonasana)
This is a much needed body stretch that works in opening up the hips. It also increases stamina and strengthens the legs. Pose can be practiced from 1st trimester.
Method:  Stand straight with feet wide apart; bend right leg at the knee 90 degrees while extending the left leg sideways. With arms stretched out to the sides palms down, raise your left arm upwards and stretch it right above your head. Ensure to keep arm straight.
Bend your right hand at the elbow and place it on right knee. Inhale and hold pose for at least 60 seconds. Exhale and return to start position. Reverse legs and repeat pose.
Hero Pose (Virasana) with Goddess Arms
This pose helps with swollen legs while also very effective in improving posture, and relieving tension in upper shoulder and neck. It strengthens the arms, shoulders and upper back too in preparation for the many hours you’ll spend carrying your baby.
Method: In a kneeling position (pad knees with a folded blanket/towel for comfort) with inner knees together and thighs parallel to the floor, position feet slightly wider than hips. Lean upper body forward slightly while sitting your hips in between your feet (use a pillow as props). Rest weight evenly between feet and inhale. Extend your arms out to sides and bend elbows slightly with palms facing up. Hold position for 1 – 2 minutes. Lift arms higher and hold pose for 5 minutes.
The Sleeping Abdominal Stretch Yoga Pose (Supta Udarakarshan Asana)
Want a pose to ease stiffness in your spine? Try this out! It’ll also help in improving digestion. This is quite handy in seeing you through 2nd and 3rd trimester without hassles.
Method: Lying down on your back, place both hands beneath head with fingers interlocked. Bend knees ensuring the soles of your feet are on the ground. Turn your head to the left and legs to the right in one fluid stretching motion to produce a twist at the waist (you should feel your spine stretching). Repeat this sequence on other side with lowering of the legs towards left and moving the head towards the right.

Drink Recipe: Sparkling Pomegranate Citrus Punch

Ever had a taste of fresh pomegranate juice?
Do you know that Pomegranates are amongst the healthiest fruits in the world? Discovered way back in ancient Egypt but though believed to have originated from Iran, Pomegranates have been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years.  However, many are still oblivious of the affluence of nutritional benefits packed in this super red fruit.
The potent antioxidant Punicalagin found in the skin and juice of pomegranate contributes immensely to its wholesomeness. Several studies have shown that pomegranates have great anti-inflammatory properties (that fight against arthritis and other joint related infirmities) and are quite effective in lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and preventing heart diseases.
Pomegranates are also known to be potent in inhibiting reproduction of cancer cells and for some cancers, a total elimination. Rich in fibre, vitamins A, C, E and several more nutrients, the immune supporting effects of Pomegranate are huge.
Mentioned its potency as an aphrodisiac yet? Pomegranate juice is known to strongly boost libido and to some extent, fight impotence. Also referred to as the Chinese Apple, this ancient super fruit tremendously promotes hair growth and can do wonders for your skin.
Need to keep flu, ulcer, dental plaques, conjunctivitis, menstrual flashes, or even diarrhea at bay? You just got yourself a lot more reasons to include pomegranate in your regular diet. Incredible, right?
Almost similar in shape like oranges, the taste of pomegranates can sometimes appear tangy and fairly bitter. But oranges complement nicely to bring-out its strong flavour in a subtle way.
The fresh burst of oranges gives a distinct sweet-tartness that’s awesomely refreshing. A terrific mix of Pomegranate and Citrus oranges to give you the trendiest of flavours! And that’s what you get with Pomegranate Citrus Punch – an absolutely delightful blend!
This combination is amazingly versatile, and can be enjoyed as a smoothie, mocktail or punch. Having guests over and need something exceptional to jumpstart your gathering? Or thinking of giving yourself some fruity treat? This punch recipe just about sorts it all.
You’ll need:

3 Oranges, peeled
2 whole Pomegranates
75cl, any sparkling wine of choice
1 cup of water
Sliced oranges, unpeeled (garnish)

Serving: 8
Preparation:( Pomegranate Citrus Punch)
Getting the seeds out of Pomegranate can be a bit tricky but here’s a simple way to it. Cut pomegranate into half, then immerse into a bowl full of water and carefully dislodge seeds. As you do this, white membrane comes off to the top and your seeds settle into the bowl. Carefully pour out the water with the floating membrane pieces then take seeds out and pour into blender.
Add water and grind till pureed and then strain with a colander to bring out juice. Set aside.
Next, squeeze juice out of oranges. Pour both juices from oranges and pomegranate into a pitcher or punch bowl. Add in your sparkling wine, stir and serve into glasses over ice cubes. Garnish with sliced oranges or some pomegranate seeds. That’s it – you’ve got your juicy bubbly punch!
If looking for a quickie breakfast, simply put a little bit more substance into it by blending seeds, peeled oranges and a handful of greens – voila! You’ve a healthy smoothie meal right before you. Great, isn’t it?
Wondering if pomegranates can be found in Nigeria? Absolutely yes! Pomegranates are grown in the Northern part of our very own Naija. And can be found in popular fruit markets and definitely in the fresh fruit sections of superstores in Lagos and some other parts of Nigeria.
