Makeup On The Go: Quick Makeup Tips For The Working Woman

There are days things just don’t go as planned; you barely have time to put breakfast on the table or pack lunch, so you cannot afford to waste time on your makeup or you will be late. This makeup tutorial is for such days and this routine could be done in less than 10 minutes depending on how fast you are. I will break it into five quick steps and suggest products to use along the line.
Quick Makeup Tips
Apply Foundation
The first thing you should do is even your complexion and this is where the foundation comes in. You could apply this with a sponge or brush and please ensure you blend your foundation well. There are a lot of foundations available but you can try Maybelline matte mouse foundation or Revlon colorstay foundation, just be sure to pick the right shade of foundation for you.

Fill Your Brows
Pencil in your brows mimicking the natural direction of your hair and use your spoolie (mascara wand) to blend it out, don’t bother with highlighting; there’s no time today. Any medium brown pencil will be okay to fill your brows.
Apply Eye Shadow, Line Your Lids And Lube Your Lashes
Use a nude or bronze shadow on your lids, you could just apply this with the ultimate applicator; your fingers. Your fingers will blend the eye shadow even faster than a brush. Try the LA Girl nude collection eye shadow, you will be sure to find a shade that works for you. Line your upper and lower lids and use a touch of mascara on your upper lash, you don’t need to lube your lower lashes since you are rushing. The Maybelline Collosal Kajal and Mascara are suitable for this.

Swipe A Lip Shade
You could use a bright lipstick, or lip gloss since your eye is subtle or you could also opt for a subtle lip shade.
Apply Powder
You will need this to reduce shine, so go on apply the powder, take a look in the mirror and off you go.

I’m sure a lot of us already have some of these products in our makeup bag, so just bring them out and use them quick.

15 Minute Dinner Recipe: Plantain Veggie Pottage

A very busy weekday? Need something speedy and easy to rustle up in less than half an hour for the night? I sure feel you. Some days can get so loaded that putting dinner together could be an obvious dilemma. Like always, I’ve got your back – here’s something delightful for you!
Plantain Porridge is quite a famous Nigerian cuisine, an incredible delicacy that’s enjoyed by many. Today’s quick dinner recipe is almost similar but with a twist – rather than use green leafy vegetables, I’m using assorted veggies. So I’m calling it Plantain Veggie Pottage.
When considering quick fixes, what comes most handy are those things in your freezer/pantry. My daughter’s inseparable bond with plantains makes them a regular grocery at home. Veggies, on the other hand, are readily available and versatile. That’s why I love to always have them around in the fridge. For me, they’re that extra touch to quick fixes; that extra something that takes a meal from bland to wholesomely appetising.
Unripe plantains are considered most nutritious and primarily used for porridges. However, ripe or unripe, any can be utilised for this recipe.
 Plantain Veggie Pottage Recipe

Ingredients:

4 Fingers Plantain
1 medium sized onion, chopped
3 diced Carrots
2 fresh Green peppers, sliced
1 cup Cabbage, sliced
1 Tbsps. Tomato Puree
1 Tbsps. Ground chilli pepper
Chicken/Beef Stock (if available)
2 Tbsps. any choice of healthy cooking oil
Seasoning Cubes
Salt to taste

Directions:
Wash and peel the plantain. Cut into desired sizes.
If using chicken stock, pour the desired quantity into the pot on medium heat. Alternatively, you could pour a cup or two of water into the pot.
Place sliced plantain and a pinch of salt into the pot and bring to boil for 5 minutes. While the plantain cooks, chop veggies and set aside.
Add chilli pepper, onions, tomato puree, oil and seasoning into the pot of plantains. Stir and taste for salt. When plantains are almost tender, add in the chopped veggies (now is the best time to toss in some of that animal protein you’ve got stored away in the freezer. Boiled, fried or grilled, add them in). Stir thoroughly to combine and leave to simmer on low heat for about 3minutes.
You just got yourself a yummy pot of plantain veggie pottage! Total cooking time? Approximately 15minutes and your dinner is ready to be served.

How To Make Your Own Kilishi

Ever pleasing, mouth-watering, never disappointing kilishi; always on point! As much as I try to keep my consumption of beef to the barest minimum, I never seem to get enough of kilishi. Made by sun drying freshly cut well seasoned thin sheets of meat, this yummy jerky delight is a real blessing from the North.
To me, kilishi is not just a snack but a very versatile condiment. I add it to almost any meal that comes to mind – salad, noodles, porridge, sauces – you name it; flavourful kilishi complements them nicely. Not forgetting the refreshing goodness eating kilishi with correct ijebu garri and cold water brings – hmm, nothing beats that satisfaction on a hot sunny afternoon.
Make Your Own Kilishi
Have we some kilishi lovers in the house? I bet we do! Let’s make us some homemade version of this jerked meat.

Ingredients:

1 kg of fresh lean beef, thinly sliced
2 Tbsp ground Ginger
Cloves (6 whole or ½ Tsp ground)
1 Tbsp ground black pepper
Fresh garlic cloves (alternate with ground garlic)
1 Tbsp Onion Powder
½ Tsp Ground African nutmeg (optional)
1 Tbsp Ground Red Pepper (Paprika)
1 Tbsp Ground Chilli pepper
1 Tbsp Suya Spices
1 Tbsp Groundnut powder
2 Seasoning cubes/ ½ Tsp powder
A pinch of salt

Directions:
Remove any likely fat from beef cuts and wash thoroughly. Line them in pre-heated oven and grill at 200 – 220°C for about 15-20 minutes. Ensure to flip each side of the cuts intermittently for proper drying.
While the beef grills, mix up all other ingredients in a bowl. Using a mortar or blender, grind all the fresh spices together first then combine thoroughly with the dry ones.
Carefully marinate beef slices by dipping them into the bowl of spices. Leave to soak for about 30 minutes before returning to the grilling rack/tray. Spread them out properly and grill once more in the oven but for just about 15 minutes this time.
By now, your home made kilishi is ready to be devoured. Serve and enjoy!

Fun Games That Help Develop Your Child’S Brain

Milestones are worth celebrating. The sheer joy that filled my heart as my little one started walking. Watching your infant grow is an unexplainable delightful experience; I must say. It’s the same way for all mothers, right?
Growth rate does vary because every child develops at his or her pace. However, it’s worthy to note that you can jumpstart your toddler’s developmental progress. Thinking how? Do you know that a toddler’s brain has twice as many neural connections as an adult’s?
Although the first 3-5 years of your child’s life are the most important, your child’s brain developmental process spans throughout childhood as the creation of new neurons and brain-cell connections are established well before the age of 20. As your child grows, the environment, new experiences and fun activities help greatly to stimulate his/her cognitive development and that’s where you come in.
It starts with a simple exchange of language. Your one-on-one interaction with your toddler in simple daily activities like talking, singing, reading means so much. Further engaging in interactive games together will not only boost a healthy mother-child bond but significantly ignite healthy brain connections. As your child uses her brain, new cells are developed, and new connections are established between existing cells. Games are fun ways to learn, and some have been ranked quite high on the list of brain-training activities due to their ability to boost your child’s brain capacity while she has fun. Let’s have a look at some of these games.
Mazes are an instant hit with kids. The good thing is, there are several maze books out there for various age-groups. Get them and encourage your child to figure the way out. This is one great way of improving your child’s problem-solving skills.
When buying toys, choose toys like Jack-In-the-Box and other toys that can help your child explore while also promoting interaction.

Building patterns and structures with blocks is another brain-enriching activity for your little one. Make simple structures with blocks and encourage her to do same. Gradually ask her to make her pattern and you’ll be amazed at how skilful your child becomes with practice. Figuring out sizes and colour matches and what to make out of them is a way of promoting creative thinking.
Stacking blocks or multi-coloured rings helps your child understand cause-and-effect relationships as she learns the effect stacking larger blocks on smaller ones. Encourage her to keep trying as the blocks crumble.
Role-playing, jigsaw puzzles, painting, drawing and colouring are some other indoor games that will activate your little one’s creativity while outdoor activities like “Hide and Seek” and sand castle building will help develop her motor skills.
Try out these mind-boosters regularly. Mix them up and try something new often. The aim is to enrich your child’s mind with new experiences to keep her neurons growing.

Side Hustle 101: Makeup Artistry

I became more interested in makeup when I was involved in planning my best friend’s wedding. We were trying to book a makeup artist for two days. The quotes we were getting were astronomical, at least for our budget. We ended up getting a renowned artist for a sweet deal of N200,000 that is N100,000 per day. I mean that is a comfortable monthly salary for many people.
There are a lot of complaints now about the economy. It has become harder for people to find jobs, even those with jobs are experiencing cutbacks on salary while the cost of living keeps rising. A second, third even fourth source of income is always nice to have.
Makeup artistry is a really viable option right now. Even with all the economy wahala, we Nigerians still love to party and party looking our best. It is very common for women to book makeup artists to attend events even when they are not the centre of attention. The market is available, and the demand is high.
How To Become A Makeup Artist In Nigeria

Learn your craft

It is very easy to say there are a lot of makeup artists out there, but the big names keep getting most of the jobs because people want quality and are ready to pay for it. If you have an interest in makeup, brush up your skills with classes or even YouTube tutorials. Practice as often as you can on yourself and your friends

Invest in your craft

If you are serious about making money from makeup, you got to have the right tools. Buy! Buy! Buy! You are going to have to buy beauty products for every skin shade and variety.

Create a Brand

Branding is crucial, create a brand name and logo that is instantly recognisable. This makes you look more professional. You should use this logo to watermark all your pictures on social media so that when your photos are shared, people recognise your work.

Be Social

You need to build an audience. No matter how good you are if you do not attract people, you have no way to gain customers hence no way to make money. Join all the social media networks, follow people in similar businesses that can refer customers your way. Network with event planners, photographers, models and others in the creative industry to build relationships, share business ideas and customer base. Regularly upload photos and videos of your work.

Advertise

Granted the best form of advertisement is word of mouth but to keep the business flowing and customers coming in droves, do not be afraid to promote your goods and services. Use social media to your advantage by advertising on popular platforms. Spend money to make money. If possible form a partnership with a celebrity or well-known person to use as a muse. This technique is currently trending with great results.

Keep Improving

You are only as good as your last job. Keep striving to be better.
Good luck!

Friends Are Good For Your Health

’No man is an island’. I have heard that phrase so many times in my lifetime. ‘A problem shared is a problem half solved’.  That is another very popular saying. What those two phrases mean is that it is better to have people around you. It is very easy to say human beings are terrible but in the words of 2Baba “I know you cannot trust nobody but you have to trust someone”.
There are certain benefits of having friends besides networking or financial support. Friends are actually good for your health. I wish that you read this article and feel the need to reconnect with old friends or even go out and get connected to new ones.
Benefits of Friendship

It takes effort to stay connected. Between kids and work and everything else, people are busy. A friend of mine recently had a baby and almost cut off from our whole circle of friends. It would have been very easy for me to stay afar and sulk as the single one but I made an effort to preserve our friendship. If you can find the time and energy, you may be pleasantly surprised at how fulfilling it is to be there for someone. Friends are fun and they also have their uses. They help you:

Feel supported; sometimes friends are your first customers when starting a new venture
Stay mentally sharp
Reach your goals
Develop a more active lifestyle; this holds true if you exercise or play sports together
Reduce stress
Have better health outcomes
Lengthen your lifespan

Are there benefits of being a loner?  Some researchers believe that social isolation can lead to a state of ongoing stress, which can eventually cause serious health problems. So staying connected has many benefits.
Tips for Building a Network of Friends
There are many ways to develop social connections in your community. Here are a few ideas:

Take classes in yoga, crafts, cooking even professional courses or something else that interests you
Get involved at your place of worship, a club or other organization
Volunteer for a cause you believe in e.g Slum to School or any active charity around you
Start or join a book club
Start a travel club
Join a fitness center or gym
Plan a social gathering, like a games or movie night.

As you are meeting new people, be sure to keep up with the friends you’ve already got. Devoting more time and energy to these friendships can lead to deeper, more rewarding relationships.
Connect online
Friendships can grow through online communities, too. There are plenty of sites that have been designed for social interaction, but if you use them try not to be gullible to fraudsters.

How To Do Kegel Exercises

Child birth scares some women for different reasons. I am particularly concerned with the state of the vagina after that. I worry that it may lose its tone, I mean a little human just passed through there. Childbirth is just one of the conditions that may weaken the pelvic muscles and reduce vaginal tone. Other factors include; age, obesity, straining during bowel movements and having a hysterectomy i.e. when the womb is removed. You can tell the pelvic muscles are weakened when a person experiences urinary incontinence.
The first thing to do before starting kegel exercises is to find your pelvic muscles. The pelvis is the lowest part of your stomach. You can identify the muscles when you pee.
Once you’ve identified your pelvic floor muscles you can do the exercises in any position, although you might find it easiest to do them lying down at first.

Squeeze your pelvic floor muscles for five seconds

When you’re just starting off, this is a great exercise. You don’t want to strain those muscles too much by squeezing them for too long

Release your muscles for ten seconds
Repeat the exercise ten times. This can be considered one set of Kegels. This should be enough Kegels for one time and you should do the same set of ten 3-4 times a day
Build toward squeezing your pelvic floor muscles for ten seconds at a time

You can increase the amount of seconds that you squeeze those muscles each week

Do pull-in Kegels

This is another variation on the Kegel. To perform a pull-in kegel, think of your pelvic floor muscles as a vacuum. Tense your buttocks and pull your legs up and in. Hold this position for 5 seconds and then release it. Do this 10 times in a row. It should take about 50 seconds to complete
There are devices that make kegel exercises easier; kegel balls, kegel cones, kegel bar bells even electric stimulation.

You should get results doing the kegel exercises with or without devices in about twelve weeks.
Always urinate before your kegel exercises. Also note that if you feel any pain after you are doing it wrong.

Hair Maintenance Tips For Long Hair

Who does not want healthy hair? ‘Who no like good thing?’ We all want healthy, long hair and at times we envy people with long hair and just wish it were ours. Well, today I bring good news; I come with glad tidings on getting that luxurious hair you have always dreamed of. Here are tips to getting long healthy hair:
Long Hair Maintenance Tips
Get Regular Trims
Regularly trim split ends; split ends cause breakage and if not trimmed, will travel upward weakening your hair. You should trim your hair every 6-8 weeks, making sure you do not trim off too much hair.
Minimize Shampoo Sessions
I know we like a clean scalp but try to reduce your hair’s exposure to shampoo. When you wash your hair, use sulfate-free shampoos as sulfate strips your hair of vital oils that make your hair grow healthy and strong.
Wash With Cool Water
I know a lot of us like to wash our hair with hot water at the salon probably but hot water strips the hair of natural oils, leaving our hair dry and flaky, which could lead to hair loss. Washing with cool water will help to close the hair cuticle and lock in moisture.
Turn Down The Heat
I know we all love to use a blow dryer, curling iron or straightener, but frequent heat styling could cause irreparable damage. If you have to heat style, try using a lower heat setting and also ensure you use a heat protectant.
Eat Well
Hair loss and breakage can occur as a result of poor diet. Eat protein-rich foods like fish, beef, eggs, legumes etc. to promote hair growth.
Massage Your Scalp Regularly

Hair massage not only feels good, but it also stimulates hair follicles and boosts circulation which can promote new hair growth. Adding natural oil such as argan or chamomile can help moisturise the scalp and nourish your hair.
Moisturize
Apply hair cream to your hair daily to keep it hydrated.
Whatever you do, don’t give up! Follow these tips and have faith that you are on your way to having long, healthy looking hair.

How To Rock Ripped Jeans

The ripped jeans trend is back from the 90s and are definitely hotter than ever. I bet every woman has at least a pair of ripped jeans in her closet. These trendy ripped jeans come in a variety of styles – from the sexy skinny jeans to cool and casual boyfriend jeans with a cropped hem.
Chic outfits can be created with ripped jeans by cross-mixing with other styles such as a feminine blouse for a girly and tough look, American Apparel tee for a casual and basic look, button down shirt for a classy mix, plaid shirt for a trendy look, and the list goes on.
Fitted Or Baggy Jeans?
Fitted or Skinny ripped jeans are definitely a hot choice for those who want to add some sexy rock ‘n roll look to their outfit. The con is, the slim fit along with the distressed effects of the pants can over-emphasize a prominent butt, hips and thighs which not every woman is comfortable flaunting especially once you get older. So if you don’t mind the extra highlighting of your curves, you can go for this. The straight leg ripped boyfriend jeans, on the other hand, gives a different vibe, with its slightly wide legs and baggy cut you’ll look effortlessly cool.
How To Look Chic In Ripped Jeans

For a classy look, ripped jeans and a simple sweater are super cool. Add a statement necklace and heels, to get a more awesome outfit.
You can front-tuck a button down shirt into skinny destroyed jeans, and add some booties, this would give you a super classy look. Pair a tank top, a cardigan, and sneakers with your ripped jeans . To make this look less bummy, wear form-fitting ripped jeans and spice up your look with some cute accessories.
For a more feminine look, wear feminine accessories like gold jewelry, a floral scarf, pretty earrings, and heels. For a more professional vibe, add heels and a blazer with your ripped skinny jeans.
For a sexy girly look, pair your ripped jeans with a hat and a bright tank top. Wear high-waisted destroyed denim with a sparkly crop top for some serious glamour.
Accessorize with bangle bracelets, high heels, a necklace or a fedora hat. Make sure your accessories are simple and that they don’t look too shabby with the rest of the outfit. Wear trendy shoes with wider heels and platform or open toe shoes, which softens the jeans, making it look more feminine and girly.

Rice Water – The Asian Beauty Secret

Rice is a staple food in many regions, especially Asian countries like China and Japan. Due to its easy availability in these countries, Asian women have made it a part of their diet as well as beauty regimen.
Rice water is loaded with nutrients that can be beneficial for your skin and hair. Rice contains vitamins B, C and E as well as minerals and eight essential amino acids that promote overall health and beauty. You can use rice water every day as part of your cleansing skin care routine, morning or evening.
Rice Water Beauty Treatment
As A Body Scrub
You can make a body scrub by using the rice leftover from making the rice water. To create the body scrub, grind the rice and mix it with 1 or 2 teaspoons of olive oil and lemon juice each (you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil) and rub it into the skin to exfoliate and nourish.
As A Face Toner
Rice water also serves as a natural substitute for regular face toner which can also help to reduce the size of the pores on your skin. The trick is to simply dab a bit of rice water onto your face and gently massage it into your skin for a couple of minutes. With regular use you will notice your skin feeling soft, tight, and radiant.
As An Acne Treatment
Dabbing rice water on skin also helps heal acne and cools the redness of an outbreak. It acts as an astringent on the skin, tightening the pores.
As A Treatment For Eczema
The starch components in rice water are effective in easing the effects of eczema on your skin. Dip a clean wash cloth into the water and pat all over the affected skin. Continue doing this for a couple of minutes and make sure you air dry it.

How To Prepare Rice Water

Rice water is easy to prepare at home. What you’ll need:

1-2 cups of uncooked rice (brown, white long grain, white short grain, jasmine, or what ever you have)
2 cups of water

Steps

Rinse the rice with about a cup of water to remove any dirt or impurities.
Place 1-2 cups of uncooked rice in a bowl and cover with water.
Let the rice soak for 15 to 30 minutes.
Swirl it around and lightly knead it until the water turns cloudy. This will help the vitamins and minerals seep into the water, creating a nourishing rinse for your hair and skin.
Strain out the rice water into a clean bowl or container.
Store your rice water in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Your rice water is ready to use!
