The Off-The-Shoulder Trend

Off- the- shoulder styles are in trend this season. The off-the-shoulder design can be found in tops or in dresses, making it endlessly versatile and extremely popular. This beautiful design is suddenly everywhere from formal to casual wears and even as Aso ebi. Yes, wedding guests now sew off- the- shoulder with their Ankara, lace, satin, silk and other aso ebi materials.
I love this shoulder-baring style for two reasons – it’s a silhouette that can be paired with anything from flared pants to denim shorts to maxi skirts and it’s flirty in a non-obvious way.
How To Rock Off-The-Shoulder Styles

Off the shoulder can be paired with jeans, pants maxi skirts, mini-skirts, knee-length skirts, shorts. Off-the-shoulder dresses also come in beautiful short and maxi dresses.

Preparing for Childbirth II – Perineal Massage

Being pregnant could be a joyful time as you are expecting the birth of your baby; but it could also be a stressful and even fearful time, especially if you have friends or family around you who think that telling you fearful stories of their labour and delivery is funny. These people keep increasing your fear by telling you they had an episiotomy and second degree tears, which may make you wonder if you have to go through the same pains.
Well, you might not have to, if you regularly do perineal massages. Experts have suggested that regularly performing perineal massage in the last six weeks of pregnancy could help prevent tears and having an episiotomy done.
Perineal massage is the process of using the fingers to massage the perineum (the area between the vagina and the rectum) of a pregnant woman. It is done to relax and soften the perineum in order to prepare the vagina for delivery thereby preventing tearing and reducing the need for an episiotomy.
You could do the massage yourself or you could ask your partner to help out.
How to do Perineal Massage

Take a warm bath, this will help you feel relaxed and soften the perineal area.
Cut your fingernails (or your partner’s fingernails) short, so the nails would not injure you.
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, so as not to introduce germs into the birth canal.
Get into a comfortable position, the best position being lying on the bed propped up with pillows to support your back with knees raised and bended. Try to be as comfortable as possible.
You will need to lubricate your thumbs and perineal tissues. Olive oil is probably best to do this with since you can get it easily.
Place both of your thumbs about 1 inch inside your vagina while resting your fingers on your buttocks as shown below.

Press down towards the anus and to the sides of the vagina wall.
Hold in this position for about a minute, you will feel a slight burning or stretching sensation.
Gently massage the lower half of your vagina using a U-shaped motion, going back and forth, up and down. Do this for 2-3 minutes
Repeat steps 7-9 for about 10 minutes.

Things to Note

You do not need to do perineal massages if you are having a Caesarean section.
If it is not your first pregnancy, you don’t need to do the massage because your perineum is probably already stretched enough. Though there’s no harm in trying.
If you are not doing the massage yourself, your partner should use the index fingers.
Do not start perineal massages until at least your 34th week of pregnancy.
You should perform the massage daily in the final 6 weeks to delivery.
Don’t do perineal massage if you have a history of preterm labour, premature rupture of membranes or a vaginal infection.

Quick Ways to Get Food Stains Off Clothes

I am afraid to wear white out till this day. I just fear that at the end of the day I would look like I rolled in mud. I may be exaggerating a bit but one of my worst fears is messing up my outfit. Stains on clothes definitely do not say chic and sophisticated.
The absolute worst places to get food stains are at work, on a date, at a wedding you name it. Places where you need to grab a bite and still look put together.
When I started researching quick ways to remove stains, I found the oddest items can be used like corn starch and hydrogen peroxide but really who goes around with stuff like that in their bags?? Hey if you do more grease to your elbow.
Food Stains
I am just going to highlight the easiest quickest solutions
Tea/ Coffee

Run to the bathroom and rinse thoroughly with hot water. You may be lucky and this is all you may have to do then stand in front of the hand dryer for some minutes. If this doesn’t work use a little hand soap to wash off the stain before drying.
Chewing Gum

I hope it is yours. Either way just allow it to harden as much as possible so you just scrape off.
Peanut Butter

I am assuming you packed yourself a sandwich to work. You should use a detergent or wash as soon as possible
Red Wine

Use this opportunity to order another glass or bottle, this time white wine. Pour some white wine on the red wine stain and wait five minutes. You could also use salt. If this fails it is off to the bathroom with you.
Ketchup

Assuming you are at a restaurant when this happens ask for vinegar. Allow to soak then rinse.
Baby food
You know how that happens so easily. Scrape as much as possible then dab the spot with a damp cloth.
Chocolate

Use paper towels to dab off and clean the area then it is off to the bathroom with you.
Oils

You should be very careful when eating anything oily. I know this is crying over spilt milk. Use talcum powder to soak up the oil then use washing liquid.

Shoe Trend

When I think about shoes especially the ones I wish I had, I just scroll through Lisa Folawiyo of Jewel by Lisa’s Instagram page and I am awash with feelings. I mean just from her page I get shoe envy, shoe crush, shoe goals, shoe everything.
Guess what? I actually found all the latest shoe trends of 2016 in one wardrobe and I am happy to share them with you. I am sure you have been seeing some of them around but now you know how to rock them in the chicest of fashion.
Mules (Shoes)

Mules are perfect. They can be worn for almost every occasion both day and night. There are a lot of styles that are super comfortable.
Block Heel

One of my closet friends describes my style as slouchy chic and very old school. This trend is definitely up my alley. I love my block heels with ballerinas, sandals even court shoes.
Brogues

They are not exactly new fashion but you would still look cool rocking them.
Gladiators

Personally, I have never been a fan but seeing my style icon rock them has given me ideas.
Slides

We have all borrowed our boyfriend’s Nike slides at some time but these are better and they were made for you. Heck Rihanna has a fur slide collection in conjunction with Puma.
Sneakers

You don’t have to be a tom boy to rock this trend. These days they come in sequins, camouflage, animal prints, denim. You can rock this with a skirt, track suits in fact everything.
Flats

Well because comfort will always be in fashion.
Platforms

Stand tall and stand out with bold platforms. This is uber stylish. Also one of my favourite hoe trends though it has also been around for a while.

Now the IT shoe of the moment has to be Acqua Azzura Wild Thing

Which would you be buying first?

Should You Spank Your Kids?

Hello Mom,
Pushed to your breaking point and you just couldn’t help but spank your kid? Trust me, we’ve all been there. But do you know what hitting your child does? It drives home the wrong message in more ways than one. Yes, you read me right!
Spare the rod and spoil the child. Isn’t that what the old proverb says? Definitely! This proverb is a way of saying children should be corrected. But on the contrary, it has formed the basis for child spanking – an insidious act done by some parents and even condoled in some schools. Should child spanking be a form of discipline? Hmm, I sure don’t think so. And here’s why.
Enforcing discipline through spanking causes fear in a child not understanding. It teaches the child to avoid you (the punisher), not what they did wrong. And there’s every possibility that the wrong will be repeated.
Do you know that spanking is damaging to the long-term mental health of children as well? Studies show that children who were spanked are more prone to depression, low self-esteem and anxiety. They’re also more likely to become deviants, aggressive and anti-social adults. According to these studies, more than 40% of aggressive people had a violent childhood. Physical punishments like beating/spanking rank top on the list of childhood violence/abuse. Hitting is a way of teaching the child to be a hitter and this forms the basis of their relationship with others as they grow (little wonder, we’ve got an alarming rate of increased domestic violence).
 Spank Your Kids?

Here’s a common scenario that I’ve publicly witnessed many times – a misunderstanding between two playing kids. One hits the other and the victim breaks out crying. An adult comes into the scene and the hitting kid instantly gets a good spank on the bum (worst case scenario, a slap on the cheek or back). Rather than get a counsel on reasons not to hit, the child gets hit in return. The kids just got a clear demonstration that it’s right to hit people (especially as a bigger one). You just modelled to the child that by hitting him in return, you have corrected the wrong he did to the other child – in other words, violence is the way to go in resolving issues.
In our African society where spanking is widely encouraged, common phrases like – “I wasn’t spared by my parents”, “my dad had a cane for me” – are often used to justify physical punishment. However, the question is, how many of us can truly refer to those times as happy childhood moments? If we can’t, why should our children be subjected to same?
Interestingly, a child is more likely to remember the hurt from one spank than the show of love from ten hugs. Is spanking then really necessary? If you ask me, there are less frightening detrimental options at our disposal as parents to address childish misbehaviours.
What’s your take?

Showing Skin at the Beach – How much is too much?

This would not be a serious article if we were not Africans. It is really difficult living in the times we are in right now. Most people have been exposed to western culture either through the media or travels and experiences.
Nigerians are the most travelled people in the world. I have uncles who joke that if you travel to a strange land and there is no single Nigerian you should leave that place because it must be a bad land. Jokes aside what I am trying to say that if you have people who have been around as much as we have then there is definitely a mix of cultures. However, I have noticed some way of thinking stays true to us.
Africans and Middle Eastern cultures believe that women should be covered up as a sign of dignity and respect. The western world believes in freedom of expression and liberalism that includes showing as much skin as one desires. Do you know there is even a ban on women been covered up at beaches in Cannes?
After you have been round the world, frolicked with stars become even a sort of celebrity yourself, how much skin is too much at the beach?
I have to burst your bubble here and tell you Bar Beach is not the same as a beach in the Bahamas.  If you wear a bikini here you would be the centre of attention. You would also most likely stick out like a sore thumb. This applies to Alpha Beach, Elegushi and Oniru Beach in Lagos, in fact any public beach in Nigeria.

There is a loop hole here, wait for it. Now, If you wanted to wear a bikini to Inagbe Resort or Ilashe, La Campaigne Tropicana and other private beaches in Lagos and around Nigeria, I say bring your A game because you will have a run for your money competing with the hotties around you.
To answer the question, “How much skin is too much?” It depends on your environment and how bold and confident you are. When in Rome be like the Romans.
There are some benefits of being covered up at the beach;

Preventing sunburns
No Abrasions

Some people go to the beach to really let loose, run around play with the children, ride horses even swim so there are less chances of getting cuts and scratches if your skin is well protected

You may be more care free

You may have more fun if you are less conscious how your belly looks in that suit

No wardrobe malfunctions

I mean what would you do if your bikini top slips off with a bunch of onlookers ogling you?

Simple Breakfast: Catalan Tomato Bread

I recently came across a very interesting meal. A true Spainish delight, that’s what Pan con Tomate is. Also known as Pa amb tomaquèt, this is a basic staple meal not only for the Catalans (where it originated from), but all over Spain. Talking of cuisines, the Spainards sure have a way with foods. Their unique cooking and food selection is an integral part of their rich history; visiting Spain and not indulging in their foods is almost a sin.
Today’s recipe is one of Spain’s finest. Very simple and common, this Spanish dish makes one quick tasty breakfast. A perfect healthy dish in its simplicity; that’s how i classify this tactfully combined meal of bread and tomato. All you need is bread, tomatoes, olive oil, a pinch of salt and sometimes, garlic (as preferred).
Bread may not rank high on the list of healthy food options; it however has its benefits. Containing fibre, several vitamins and nutrients but high in carbs, bread remains a good source of energy for your day. Thus, an ideal breakfast option (though to be eaten in moderation). Moreover, the addition of tomatoes, olive oil and garlic gives an undeniably healthy punch to this bread meal.
Catalan Tomato Bread

Ingredients:

1 loaf bread, cut into 3/4 inch slices
2 large garlic cloves (optional)
3 – 4 ripe Tomatoes
3 Tablespoons extra-virgin Olive oil

Preparation:
Slice the bread into 3/4 inch slices and toast or grill (2 minutes). While the bread is still warm, cut garlic into half and rub sparingly on bread slices.
Wash tomatoes thoroughly, pat dry with paper napkin and cut into half. Rub onto bread slices, drizzle each slice with olive oil, and lastly, sprinkle a pinch of salt on it.
Another variation is to grate tomato pulp into a bowl, add a bit if salt then mix together. After rubbing the garlic on each bread slice, spread your tomato and salt mix, then drizzle with oil.
To make this tasty meal more filling, top bread with some scrambled eggs and (or) sausage. Cheese is another yummy option for toppings.
That’s it, you just got yourself a yummy Spanish breakfast! Ensure to serve immediately so the bread doesn’t get too soaked up in the tomato juice if left to sit for too long.
Total Preparation time: 5-10 minutes
***The light sprinkling of salt over the tomato and olive oil is absolutely neccessary in blending the unique flavours of this delicious meal.
Real simple and quick, right?

Smoothies are a great way for you to get all of your most nutritionally-packed foods into one glass, but it can also work for your kids.
Smoothies include the whole fruit, so the vitamins and other nutrients are in a very natural form, combined with the fruit’s fibre and this means that they cause fewer fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
The best thing is children tend to like smoothies made of fruits that they would otherwise not touch, so by drinking them they get used to a larger variety of real fruit tastes.

Snack Right

As I write this, I am in my office contemplating a large plate of Ofada rice with plenty orisirisi and a chilled bottle of cola. I looked down at my belly and I knew that would be the worst decision especially as I am not hungry, I just want to snack.
Overeating is a problem a lot of people struggle with especially those who binge. This simply means to indulge excessively especially in food and alcohol. We also have those who eat to comfort themselves when they are sad, anxious even those who eat excessively when they are happy.
We are talking about those whose emotions are tied to their stomachs or you can be like me, eating because you are bored or for a lack of activity. As we all know what you consume on the inside gets to show on the outside and not always in a flattering manner. However if you must snack, try to do so with food items with low fat and generally lower calories. Try some these snack ideas when next you are in the mood.
